Moss spent 21 years as a public school music teacher.<\/p>\n<p>Moss earned a master\u2019s degree in elementary and secondary administration and supervision from the University of Virginia. A member of Mary Washington\u2019s College of Education (COE) Advisory Board, she received UMW\u2019s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2006 and served on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.umw.edu\/bov\/\">UMW Board of Visitors<\/a>\u00a0from 2007 to 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, she joined COE Dean Pete Kelly and Spotsylvania County Schools Director of Human Resources <strong>Melanie Kay-Wyatt \u201992 <\/strong>to teach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DSeArt5RHbY&feature=youtu.be\">\u201cThe Pandemic\u2019s Impact on K-12 Education,\u201d<\/a> the final installment of UMW\u2019s free eight-week online \u201cCOVID-19 in Context\u201d summer course. Fulbright award to pursue a Ph.D. in digital humanities at King\u2019s College London.<\/p>\n<p>Grimes\u2019 research concerns making cultural heritage more accessible, discoverable, and relatable through technology, such as digitizing ancient artifacts. Grimes earned a bachelor of arts in Italian studies and classical civilization at Mary Washington. She spent her junior year in Italy, and she got a UMW research grant to create a blog documenting ancient Roman sarcophagi, which she studied for her honors thesis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI attribute this experience to my first exposure to my profession and passion in digitizing artifacts,\u201d she wrote by email.<\/p>\n<p>Grimes began her King\u2019s College studies from her home in Washington state because of COVID-19 restrictions, but she planned to move to London in October. Grimes received a master\u2019s degree in art history from George Mason University in 2013. research specialist at Princeton University\u2019s Eviction Lab, wrote a <em>Washington Post<\/em> opinion piece about housing insecurity during the coronavirus pandemic. His article, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/07\/27\/want-help-kids-weather-this-school-year-keep-them-getting-evicted\/\">Want to help kids weather this school year? Keep them from getting evicted<\/a>, <\/em>was published July 24, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith many school districts shifting to online instruction this fall, students are expected to trade school buildings for spaces in their homes, a change predicated on students having homes in the first place,\u201d Edmonds wrote. \u201cWhat happens when that space isn\u2019t there, or when students are suddenly displaced?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PBS <em>Newshour<\/em> interviewed Edmonds for a July 7 segment on eviction. Later that month, NPR\u2019s Philadelphia affiliate, WHYY\u2019s <em>Radio Times<\/em>, spoke with him about the impending end of the federal eviction moratorium.<\/p>\n<p>Edmonds studied math and economics at Mary Washington and earned a master of science in education policy at the University of Pennsylvania in 2017. In between, he taught high school precalculus in King George County, Virginia. That experience, according to the Princeton University website, guided his research on inequality, particularly in education.<\/p>\n<p>At UMW, Edmonds was known for playing classical violin in the orchestra and strings in the popular band Wylder. Less public was his work as the data analyst for the Student Transition Program, studying academic outcomes for first-generation and traditionally underrepresented minority students. Edmonds was a research assistant at the School District of Philadelphia while he studied at Penn, and he researched the causes of teacher exit in Tulsa, Oklahoma, public schools.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the Norfolk, Virginia, native explores how teachers from historically black college and universities (HBCUs) affect student achievement. href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/?sh=85f3522254cc\">Forbes.com<\/a> reported that business was booming at Aspetto, makers of attractive bullet-resistant clothes and tactical gear. The company, started at UMW by <strong>Abbas<\/strong> <strong>Haider \u201912<\/strong> and <strong>Rob<\/strong> <strong>Davis \u201912<\/strong>, expected revenue to reach more than $12 million in 2020 despite the pandemic, the magazine said.<\/p>\n<p>2021 looks even better. Revenue is projected to pass $25 million because of multimillion-dollar deals to make tactical gear for Air Force women, armored vests for Homeland Security, ballistic shields for the Internal Revenue Service, stab vests for the Bureau of Prisons, and more.<\/p>\n<p>The Fredericksburg-based business has adapted and grown from its early days of making bespoke clothing, innovating while meeting customer needs \u2013 and always being fashionable. Haider told <em>Forbes<\/em> that after winning the bid for Air-Force female-specific gear, he started getting inquiries from other nations, including the Netherlands and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Haider told the magazine Aspetto\u2019s next move is cybersecurity, with its acquisition of a small company in that area. \u201cThe goal is to continue doing innovative stuff on the armor side and diversify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haider and Davis have rebuffed all venture funding and the attention of larger companies. Reed Jr. \u201911<\/strong> to the UMW Board of Visitors. In addition, Sharon Bulova and Edward B. Hontz have been reappointed to second terms. The appointees will serve four-year terms, which will expire June 30, 2024. Reed succeeds <strong>Deirdre Powell White \u201991<\/strong>, who has moved out of state.<\/p>\n<p>A member of UMW\u2019s James Farmer Legacy Council, in 2011 Reed was one of 40 college students nationwide to earn a place in the PBS 50th anniversary commemoration of the 1961 Freedom Rides. The 10-day bus tour traced the original bus route, and several of the first Freedom Riders participated. Reed called the trip \u201clife-changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The business administration major first learned about civil rights leader James Farmer, architect of the Freedom Rides, during a UMW first-year seminar on the life and legacy of the late history professor. The class propelled Reed to hold many leadership positions at Mary Washington. As a student, he received the Citizenship Award for Diversity Leadership, the James Harvey Dodd Scholarship in Business Administration, and the Emerging Leaders Diversity Scholarship.<br \/>\nIn 2017, Reed received the Young Business Alumni Award.<\/p>\n<p>Reed, who lives in Sterling, Virginia, with wife <strong>Missira Amuda \u201912<\/strong>, is a manager for Federal Advisory Services Practice at KPMG, a global network of professional firms providing audit, tax, and advisory services. He develops business and financial strategies to support federal clients.<\/p>\n<p>Sharon Bulova was chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors from 2009-2019, had served as supervisor of the Braddock District in Fairfax County, and had led the board\u2019s budget committee. She also had served as chair of the Council of Government\u2019s \u201cGreater Washington 2050 Coalition,\u201d which led to the adoption of a regional planning initiative signed by all 21 of the Council of Government jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p>The Fairfax resident helped establish the Virginia Railway Express commuter rail system and has served on the its operations board since its inception. The 2009 recipient of Council of Government\u2019s Elizabeth & David Scull Metropolitan Public Service Award, Bulova earned the Virginia Transit Association\u2019s 2012 Local Public Official of the Year award. Her daughter is <strong>Karin Bulova Johansson \u201991.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Edward B. \u201cTed\u201d Hontz, a former Navy captain, is the vice president of Basic Commerce and Industries, Inc., in charge of the company\u2019s Navy programs in Dahlgren, Virginia. While in the Navy, he served a year in Vietnam and participated in numerous military operations. He also fulfilled various on-shore duties, including as commanding officer of the AEGIS Training Center in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>The Stafford resident was a member of the Stafford County Economic Development Authority and the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce board of directors. In 2015, he became a citizen member of the Mary Washington Healthcare board of trustees. A founding member of the Fredericksburg Military Affairs Council in 2006, he served on its board of directors until 2012. While chair, he took a lead role in promoting the establishment of UMW\u2019s Dahlgren Campus, Center for Education and Research.<\/p>\n<p>The Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce honored Hontz with the 2015 Prince B. Woodard leadership award. Hontz led the effort to establish a UMW student leadership cash award supported by an endowment funded by previous Prince B.
