The dapper gent in the middle of this 1950s photo is Burney L. Parkinson, a professor of education and psychology at Mary Washington from 1952 through 1956. He had earlier been president of the Mississippi State College for Women. He died in 1972, at age 85.

But who, we wonder, are the stylish young women seated next to Dr. Parkinson? If you think you know, please tell us in a comment!

  1. Ellen Wheby Witherspoon says

The student on Dr. Parkinson’s right is Judy Graham Kanakanui ’54. When I transferred to “MWC” in the middle of my freshmen year in ’53, it was nice to see a familiar face! Both Judy and I were from Beckley, WV. Judy was a lively, talented music major and quite active on campus. She met and married a handsome Midshipman from Hawhii. Both are now deceaced.
